African Trade beads are decorative glass beads manufactured in Europe. They were used  between the 16th and 20th centuries throughout Africa in exchange for goods, services, slaves, and in marriage contracts.

Many beads were believed to symbolize wealth and social status.

About the Stone

The beads in this necklace are Czech in origin and were used in Mali in the mid 1900s. They are paired with antique blue trade beads.
